…and purposes, it’s been a couple of quiet days. We’ve had a few days of rain, off and on, and we love it. Even though we have been saying, “please let it rain,” we don’t ever plan for the rainy days. Well, how can we? There’s never a guarantee that it’s going to rain. So we just plan the plan and go with it if we can. “The best thing one can do when it’s raining is to let it rain” ~ Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
Tuesday, Sue spent a great deal of time pulling weeds and weed-wacking. Since the tractor is out of commission for a while, mowing is out – unless the lawn mower is used. So she’s been using the weed eater to get around the rock piles and fencing. It was really quite hot yesterday, 101° when I got home. So that was hard, hot work for her. That evening it started pouring around 5:30 p.m. We got absolutely soaked putting all the chickens away. When we had everyone all in for the night, the rain stopped. Of course. Then it started raining again around 9:30 or 10:00 last night.
Today it was still raining off and on throughout the morning. Plus we had a lot of wind as this storm moves through the area. Sue had hoped to pre-position the composted wood chips we’re using to cover the tree wells with in the orchard, but it was just too windy to think about moving that all without the tractor. After I got home, the wind had calmed down quite a bit and, even though it was still very cloudy, it was no longer raining. So, after chores, I move a bit of garden compost up to the orchard area. While I was there I decided to just go ahead and get everything I could ready to plant the final Chestnut tree. So, the hole is dug out, the compost has been added to the very bottom, the basket is positioned and the large wooden stake that we use to hold the planting tubes has been pounded in. Tomorrow we just need to plant the tree, cover it with the tube, spread the cardboard and then add the wood chips. I think the wood chips will take us the longest… we’ll just do the best we can. (I think I say that a lot!) That’s really it for today. We’ll see how we do and report back on Friday. Until then, as always~
