blogger-recognition-award-threeA little while ago, one of our sweet followers nominated us for a blogger recognition award – which is amazing! I was just blown away!  I want to thank Robin at https://haphazardhomemaker.com for nominating us for the recognition. With that nomination comes a few rules, so I’m taking some time now to finally comply. Continue reading →

chickens investigatingSo just a quick report on what Sue’s been up to the last couple of days. As you know, Vicente and his new flock of girls have been in with the goats a couple of days now. Today was the day they got to be let out in their new home. Sue reworked a door for the chickens because there was just too much that could go wrong with the door that we were going to use at first. There would have had to be another ramp installed, and then the goats would have wanted to jumps on it and play around with it… it was just better to create a new door that the chickens can use for in and out privileges, but the goats would not be able to use – or abuse – at all. In this photo you can see the little door at the bottom, cut into the bigger people door. It works like a dog door – and there is a cover that can be put into the guides on either side that covers the door for evening. Continue reading →

chickenvacationIt was a moving day again today. You know, our chickens travel around quite a lot – I’ve just been thinking about that. The layers out in the RCW are moved- as a unite – maybe once a month, less if there is more grass, more if the there’s less grass (now there’s a sentence for you). We’re always shuffling the others around to take care of behavioral issues, and the like. Lately we’ve been talking about how to consolidate. We completed a big step in that process tonight. reuse…when you can reuse??? It’s really a part of the tenants of Permaculture. I think it could fall into several places on the wheel: ethics, energy, or may be even climate. Regardless, it is one of the things we try to do as much as possible. We keep a stock pile of those items that we feel we will be able to reuse; wood, roofing materials, siding, welded or chicken wire… that sort of thing. We are keeping them in an area we visit any time we have a new project. We’ve started one recently, but it’s more of a morphing project than a build from scratch sort of thing. I’ve alluded it to it several times recently and now I can share some photos of it with you. I’d like to say that I was waiting to give you some good photos, so I didn’t blog until tonight, but the truth is, I completely forgot it was Friday.  The holidays really throw me off! be-thankful-rustic-thanksgiving-greeting-cardWe live in the U.S., so of course this is a U.S.-centric blog. I use Fahrenheit as opposed to Celsius when I’m talking about weather temp in degrees, I use feet and inches, rather than metrics, I refer to the U.S. calendar when I’m talking about seasons and holidays. So, I hope that doesn’t offend anyone too awfully, but if you’re reading this blog, you’ll just have to put up with it I suppose. The reason I bring this up, is that tomorrow is Thanksgiving Day in the U.S. and I think I’ll probably be talking about thankfulness today.  Continue reading →

set and reach goal conceptOver the weekend and this morning, we did end up accomplishing all the weekend goals we set for ourselves. Sometimes that doesn’t happen because, once we get into whatever task we’ve started, we find that it’s more involved than initially thought. Those tasks that we do regularly, we generally have an idea how long it takes, but sometimes there ends up being a monkey wrench in the works. Luckily we didn’t experience that… well, not much anyway. Continue reading →

can you believe it?

can you believeI cannot believe we are halfway through November. I can’t believe that we’re less than a week from Thanksgiving (US). This year has completely flown by and it feels just unreal to me. So many things have been going on, I guess it just makes the time go by so quickly. Seems like last week was January, and here we are almost to Christmas! There are some other things I can’t believe as well… Continue reading →

celebrate_the_small_things_std_t_nvI keep saying that there’s not a lot of big projects going on; maintenance, maintenance, maintenance; and not much happening, but you know that there are always small things happening every single day. Sometimes it’s just difficult to make those small things into an interesting post – but I did say that I’d talk about what’s been happening around the farm, so let’s do that. There are good things happening in small packages, and a couple sad things as well. Continue reading →

IMG_3536Got home this morning around 11:30. Travel is always fun, but also tiring. You want to see everyone and spend quality time, but that time always seems to go so fast. I specifically went to California to see Rhiann’s (my niece) debut as Sister Bertha in “Getting to Know the Sound of Music”. Basically, the shorter version for youth theater. It was really quite good! But I also wanted to visit family and friends as much as possible. Three days went by quickly (I don’t count the travel days), and saw me take in the food at Point Loma Seafoods with my folks, The Maincourse Restaurant with my friends Ray, Tony, Candace and Nat, the final event of San Diego’s Beer Week and Guild Fest at The Lodge at Torrey Pines (one of the most authentic Craftsman style hotels I’ve ever seen) with Bernadette, John, Ralph, and my brother – Timm, as well as the main event that I wanted to attend in the first place with my family; now, all of a sudden, I’m back! As my mind is still trying to catch up to my body, I’m thinking I’ll just do a simple post/report on my visit to Trumper’s Honey and Fruit Shack. Continue reading →
