inNo! Not Sauerkraut, Sour Crop. We have a case of sour crop in one of our chickens. Sour crop is an ailment that we’ve only had to deal with once before. With the first incident, we were able to cure just fine. Not so sure with this one.

inI always say that we are traveling on an adventure with what we are doing here. Sometimes, though, we engage in experimentation. Truthfully… that’s how all of my gardening gets done lately. “Let’s try this plant. Let’s try this on the grasshoppers. Let’s try this on the gophers.” Sometimes things work, but more often than not, they don’t. It can be very disheartening. But we continue along.

inWe accomplished a HUGE thing this Tuesday, but it can be summed up in a minimum of words – not really “total post” worthy. So, given that, I was thinking of a potpourri of a blog post today. Shall we?

inI think I spend as much time looking for title photos as I do writing blogposts. Nothing went with my acronym up top which, in my little pea brain, stands for Weird World of Weather. It is Summer here, definitely, since we are hitting the high 80’s low 90’s every day now. However, we were once again thwarted by unanticipated winds today. They just do whatever the heck they want, with absolutely no regard for our plans at all! You may be able to guess this next statement — we did not process meat birds today as planned; average wind speed today is 21, gusting to over 40 much too often. “So, what did you do?”, you ask.

inI awoke this morning to a glorious sound… quiet! Truly, the absence of wind was just amazing. I quickly texted the secretary at work and let her know that I wouldn’t be in to work until the afternoon. I knew Sue would want to take advantage of the calm since it does not happen very often. And, was I right?

in…foiled again! I told you that we wanted to do some work on the water line to the trenches where the olive trees are going to be planted. We were hoping to do back hoe work yesterday, but the wind had other ideas. We’ll try again on Tuesday.

inWhen we figure out how many meat birds we’re going to sell during the summer, Sue figures out when and how many chicks to order to give us time to raise them without too much overlap since we only have a few spaces to raise them. For this year, she also wanted to add our water-babies to the mix, so she did a lot of figuring to fit them in and made sure we had time and space to let them grow up. Unfortunately, they did NOT arrive when promised, so there’s been some amount of finagling to give them their space. You saw the very cool external brooder she made, but they are growing so quickly there was apartment swapping that needed to happen.

inIt’s an odd looking word, “firsts”. One little vowel there among a fricative, and a plosive sandwiched between two sibilants. I always feel for people trying to learn English when I come across words like this; so simple to us, but difficult to get your tongue around. This, of course, has nothing to do with the post today. It is just something that ran through my head as I was looking for a title photo. Ha!
