FullSizeRender - 2019-05-10T144453.490Sometimes its the little things that make you happy. Sue sent me this photo of a small cactus plant in bloom. The bloom seems to be twice the size of the plant itself. I wasn’t sure it was going to make it at first.  Now I think I need to move it since it’s really close to a chicken run – the run wasn’t there when I first planted a little cactus garden.  Continue reading →

FullSizeRender - 2019-04-24T164456.974One of the most tragic things I know about human nature is that all of us tend to put off living. We are all dreaming of some magical rose garden over the horizon instead of enjoying the roses that are blooming outside our windows today. – Dale Carnegie
In my mind, this post was going to take on a slightly different slant, but then Sue sent me this beautiful photo of the old-fashioned climbing rose growing over at the “dinky house”. It is so genuine and gorgeous. Easiest care rose around this place. It grows when it’s time, blooms when it wants; is as happy as punch if you simply remember to water it every once in a while. Brings a smile to my face whenever I think about it. Got me thinking – what else around our farm gets us smiling? Turns out that there’s quite a lot that does! I really need to think about this today. Continue reading →

hello-visitorGuess what, guess what, guess what??? We had some great visitors last night! Our friends, Ron and Kathy, brought their sweet nieces for a visit. They are visiting from out of state, over spring break – I think? They can correct me if they read it :).  Jill and Heidi are their names. Very sweet, incredibly intelligent young women (thanks for liking our page ladies!). Ron and Kathy brought them over to visit our little farm. We tried to entertain, but there’s not a lot to do. thieves-mouse-1024x787_4_orig.jpgWe feed a heck of a lot of different animals here. I don’t mean chickens and ducks and geese – I mean those free loaders we didn’t intend to raise. Wild birds of all sorts, mice, gophers, and other little creatures we don’t see; some, I’m sure, we don’t even really want to know about. We are an open air farm, so to speak, so some of this is to be expected. Over the weekend, we had two funny run-in’s with thieves and scoundrels. Continue reading →

nrcs squareYesterday we had a visit from Mr. Don Decker, NRCS District Conservationist and Malpie Borderlands Project Coordinator. That is one huge title to be toting around. I didn’t have the opportunity to spend any time with him because he came while I was at work, but he spent over four hours with Sue; walking the land, talking soils, vegetation, and best practices for conservation and working the land. NRCS stands for National Resources Conservation Services and is a service from within the United States Department of Agriculture. “NRCS provides America’s farmers and ranchers with financial and technical assistance to voluntarily put conservation on the ground, not only helping the environment but agriculture operations, too.” Continue reading →

IMG_1979It’s always fun to give at any time of the year, but it’s doubly fun at Christmas… at least for me. My co-worker feels the same way and she told me she had a blast shopping this year. One of the gifts she found was for us to use on the farm and she could not wait to give it to us. So, Wednesday she made me bring home something to try out. I was kind of afraid to use it, but today it was time to put it to the test. Continue reading →

IMG_3536Got home this morning around 11:30. Travel is always fun, but also tiring. You want to see everyone and spend quality time, but that time always seems to go so fast. I specifically went to California to see Rhiann’s (my niece) debut as Sister Bertha in “Getting to Know the Sound of Music”. Basically, the shorter version for youth theater. It was really quite good! But I also wanted to visit family and friends as much as possible. Three days went by quickly (I don’t count the travel days), and saw me take in the food at Point Loma Seafoods with my folks, The Maincourse Restaurant with my friends Ray, Tony, Candace and Nat, the final event of San Diego’s Beer Week and Guild Fest at The Lodge at Torrey Pines (one of the most authentic Craftsman style hotels I’ve ever seen) with Bernadette, John, Ralph, and my brother – Timm, as well as the main event that I wanted to attend in the first place with my family; now, all of a sudden, I’m back! As my mind is still trying to catch up to my body, I’m thinking I’ll just do a simple post/report on my visit to Trumper’s Honey and Fruit Shack. Continue reading →

IMG_3532So, I’m on travel this weekend. Can you guess where I am??? This was taken yesterday at lunch. Point Loma Seafoods in Point Loma San Diego. It was a gorgeous day. No wind and around 78°. Lovely. It felt so good to have some air with a bit of moisture in it. Then we went up to Ramona, where my folks live. The weather there is almost exactly the same as at home. Today, at 3:30 p.m., it is 75° in Ramona and windy from Santa Ana. At home the high was 72° with winds most of the day. Both in Ramona and at home the winds are dying down. Kind of interesting to me that the weather is so similar at this time of year. Continue reading →

road closedYep. I’m a day late again. Totally not my intention. I got rained in at a friends house last night. Went over after work to have a glass of wine and catch up. It started raining around 6:30 and I thought – I should go soon so I can help put up the chickens if it starts raining at home. Started saying my goodbyes; at 6:45 it started absolutely pouring. I hurried on out and jumped in the car. They live on a dirt road and it was already flooding. I knew of two ways to get out, one was a short cut and fraught with gullies and dips that surely were flooded, the other was the more used way, down the quickly flooding road. It wasn’t deep, so I decided to slog it that way.  I got half way to the main road that is blacktopped when a guy in a lifted truck flagged me down and said – “you can’t go that way. The wash is flooded and you’re car is too small. So I had to call Sue and let her know that I wasn’t going to make it – and I turned around to wait out the rain at my friend’s home.   Continue reading →

IMG_3015.jpgGot back late last night, after taking an unscheduled detour due to an accident on the hwy east of Tucson, that added a bit of time to my already long drive. Isn’t it weird how, when you stop driving, your body still holds on to that driving sensation. Last night, when I closed my eyes, I saw a road stretching out in front of me… I think I drove all night. Oh well, at least I arrived safely into the (somewhat) cooler weather of Hereford. I was only gone a week, but so many things changed while I was gone. I suppose that’s normal. Just always surprises me. Continue reading →
