Even Chickens Need a Day Off

empty-nest

We’ve been trying to keep Sunday as our “day of rest,” or at least do things that are fun for us individually.  For me, today, that was going to the Military Intelligence Corps Band concert after church; for Sue, it was attending services at FCC in Ramona… listening to the music/choral groups she started show their stuff, receiving personal accolades from one of her favorite composers as well as a signed copy of the music he composed in her honor… she really didn’t know that was going to happen, but I think she had some fun.  For the chickens, it was taking a day off from laying. The photo on the left shows an empty nest.  No eggs for us to steal today!  Continue reading

Do Not Drink

Water conservation is going to be a big thing for us.  We wanted to make sure that we were able to use the grey water from the house to irrigate plants and trees, capture the rainwater as best as possible, and redirect runoff so that we can keep the water on our property as long as possible.  We’re on a well (we have two actually, but are only using one right now), and we want to be able to replenish the water we’re using as much as possible. Hillbilly Load

First Move:  Sue left Ramona for Sierra Vista on July 14,2016~ she had two dogs in the truck cab with her, two cats in the large kennel in the back, some clothes, a little food, and our camping kitchen kit, because the movers weren’t going to be able to deliver her belongings for about a week!  She looked a little bit like the Beverly Hillbillies, but it all traveled well.
It took her, roughly, 8 hours to get to the property – making many stops to give dogs potty breaks and water the cats.  That night she slept on two yoga mats surrounded by her animals who were wondering what in the world was going on.

Finger-lickin’ Chicken Plucker

pluckerOur fun thing for today: Do you remember that song from the Smothers Brothers?  “My old man is a cotton pickin’, finger-lickin’, chicken plucker! What do ya think about that?”  It’s been going round in my head all day because we purchased a Chicken Plucker from Tractor Supply.  Who knew you could get those?  We had to order it to be delivered to the store here, but it was less expensive than anything else we found on line. We also ordered a scalder from Walmart.  Getting set up for some butchering later on this year.   Continue reading

What the Heck?

So many people have asked us why we wanted to move to Arizona.  What will we be doing? What the heck is Permaculture?  Not even the built in proof readers recognize that word! Here are some answers to those questions, if you’re still interested anyway.

img_2501Why Arizona? Well, to put it succinctly, affordability.  This is a state and an area that we had usable land in an affordable price range.  Sue was able to sell her house in California and purchase a home on 9 acres, with wells, and out buildings; fenced and cross fenced, in a beautiful area (see some of our photos in the gallery) and have funds left over to begin this enterprise.  NO- it’s not in the desert! We’re located in a small “town” called Hereford, our house is around 4800 feet above sea level, nestled in the foothills of the Huachuca Mountain Range, with Oak , Mesquite, Manzanita, Sycamores, and many other beautiful native flora.  We have deer, bears, javalina, some type of wild cats and many really cool bugs!  This area is considered a birders paradise.  Come visit us and see for yourselves.
