When I say, “Quick Post”, I’m not referring to those boxes that you can purchase in the post office…. well, I guess they are really called “Ready Post”…  but rather the fact that we only really have time for a short post today.  I also need to apologize for the absence of a post on Friday; we ended up unavoidably detained in the ER (my fault – all better now), and I just never got my act together this week to do a make-up, and now, here we are at Monday, already!!! Let’s see what we can come up with to share… Continue reading →

Usually when I sit down to write, I have something in mind already. I might have to do some research on it, or talk with Sue about it before – during – and – after, but – in general – I have a good idea what’s going to go on the page. Photos often help to shape any given post, as well. There are very few times when I stare at the blinking cursor and say, “I got nuthin’.” Today is one of those days.  Not because things haven’t been happening. Not because I don’t have some neat or informative  photos to share. Rather, I just don’t have an over arching theme. I’ve got nothing to tie everything together. What’s up with that? So, what we’ll do today is this: I’m just going to upload a photo and tell you the activity or thought that it represents – they won’t be connected in any way, just snapshots of what’s been going on so far this week. Ready? Here we go…….. Continue reading →

Just another Friday update

The weekend is here… seems like such a long, short week. Sometimes this last week of the year gets all muddled; I posted a meme yesterday that said something like “Welcome to that time between Christmas and New Year, when you don’t know what day it is, who you are, or what you’re supposed to be doing.” That’s kind of how I’ve been this week.  Sue has been out of sorts as well, but that never stops her from accomplishing tasks around the farm. It seems that our “littles” have all gotten just a bit too big! We knew that was going to happen and Sue had been renovating the little chicken tractor to give the Banty babes a new place to grow up, which would allow the little layers to “go [outside] into the light, Carol Anne!” (If you don’t understand my obscure movie references, my apologies.)  Anyway~ We worked on getting things all set up for them yesterday, and last night we were able to move the banties out.  Continue reading →

Christmas Barn Dance

IMG_2202Wednesday night and most of Thursday, we had some fierce winter winds. They were blowing like crazy!  On the littles’ side of the coop, the wind was just barreling through the small chicken door – heedless of the wind shield Sue put up for just this reason. So, Sue went and picked up some straw bales from Gem’s, our local feed store, and arranged a wind break for them.  You can see Imen there, inspecting for bugs today.  This is really the first day they’ve been out with the bales, because it was so bitterly cold and windy yesterday – they allIMG_2203 hung around inside. Today it was warm and calm enough to have the door open for a few minutes when the sun was shining right inside. They love to hang out in the door way and sun themselves.  Anyway~ Sue also added three bales on the other side for the biggies as well.  Just so their food pallet would have a little protection as well. The biggies were out a bit more yesterday than the littles, but they are all still quite interested in the new hairy lumps that have been added to their run.  I was out there watching them this afternoon, and I goy the distinct feeling they think that the additions are for a Christmas Barn Dance.  I saw them making all kinds of little preparations….

I’m traveling this weekend; in Ramona, California to visit my family and friends, and to bury Belle’s ashes in the pet cemetery at the family farm. Many, many beloved pets have their final resting place on the farm, not just our family pets, but several friends’ pets as well.  Belle enjoyed many days at Grandma and Grandpa’s place. She had fun chasing the Turkeys – well, until one flew right over her, and then she simply barked from afar – she enjoyed walks in the orchard, drinking the water from the fish pond, and laying on the front porch watching the humming birds. I think it’s only fitting to bring her ashes back to her second home. Dad made a great grave marker for her and she’ll be at peace under the oak trees. It’s a poignant weekend for me.  Anyway~ Continue reading →

update…some updated information. Middle of the week usually brings us to the update on what we’ve been talking about over the last few days. I do this for a couple of reasons: 1) because it’s the middle of the week so many of the on-going projects are just that, on-going and 2) We go to choir rehearsal on Wednesday evenings, so I have to do something quickly. So here we go. Continue reading →

Busted!

IMG_1977I know you’re wondering! Wondering if we caught the egg eater. Am I right?  Well, we think we may have. I went in to collect eggs one afternoon and caught one of the girls pecking on an egg and her face was covered with egg yolk. Your culprit is pictured here. The Red! Now, she may not be the originator, or even the only one; she’s just the one we caught in the act. Since then it has escalated somewhat. Sue picked up eggs around mid-day today and then when we did chores this afternoon, and I picked up more, there weren’t any. We’re still leaving the fake egg in one of the nesting boxes, so that if the egg eaters try to peck it, they’ll be in for a surprise! Who knows if that’ll help or not, but it’s one of the remedies that people suggest.  Continue reading →

How big are those things?

IMG_1962How big indeed. They are so small! It’s amazing that you are seeing a mature chicken. You all know that Maeve is our smallest chicken; she’s some type of mottled cochin – or a crossbreed there of, we’re not exactly sure as she just came from a straight run of chicks I purchased at Tractor Supply one Spring. Sue ordered the teenagers we have now from a hatchery on-line, specifically looking for some chicks that were about like Maeve. Those chicks are now 8 weeks old and many of them are as big as her! It was difficult to get a photo of them together as they are still getting used to one another, but here’s the best I could do. Maeve is in the background and the teenagers are in the foreground, so the size comparison is difficult to see.  Take it from me, they are quite close in size. They are Bantams, so are naturally small chickens. Let me try to give you some other visual comparisons. Continue reading →

Trailer Park(ed)

IMG_1937A quick Monday update for ya’ll. Weekend seemed to go rather quickly.  We sold all the eggs at the Farmers Market on Saturday. That was good. Also, this Saturday we pushed the camper trailer into working position. It’s under the car port by the back door, so that it’s protected from Sun and rain and mostly sheltered from the prevailing winds. Sue has started demolition and took all the old rotted canvas out today. What she found is that there was a leak in the roof so most of the interior wood in the roof has rotted as well. I’ll try to take some better photos as we try to remove the heavy plywood that made up the sleeping side of the tent, tomorrow. Sue said there is a lot that can probably be salvaged. We’ll see as we go along. You can check out the initial idea from the post on March 8 called “Upcoming Projects“.   I think this one will be going on for a bit, so there will be plenty of photo opportunities.
