More Chickens?

14 Friday Apr 2017

I went to work on Tuesday and all was normal; came home and there were 8 more little chicks! Sue made the mistake of going to Tractor Supply and took a peek at the babies. She took one look at the little guys and thought we needed to add to our brood!  We have now added five Speckled Sussex to our menagerie. According to the Murray McMurray Hatchery, the Speckled Sussex was developed in Sussex,Speckled England over 100 years ago! They are supposedly a good table bird, somewhere in the medium range for weight.  The chicks vary in color from buff to brown to striped.. we have so many different little guys I can’t tell the players without a score card.  We’ll have to see what everyone turns out looking like once they’re a bit bigger.  The Sussex seem to be a really nice looking adult chicken.  To me, they look as though they’ve been out playing in the snow. What we plan to do is save the hens (if we get any… you never know) and perhaps one rooster and breed our own, if we like the looks of them.   Continue reading →

Some Firsts and an Excavation

IMG_0595Today the littles got to go out for the first time. We thought that they would enjoy the freedom and the opportunity to go outside. We also thought that, since they’d been living in the brooder side all this time, they could go outside during the day and come back in at night. So we opened the bottom brooder and they tentatively crept out. There was a lot to investigate inside, in the foreground you see the ducks night time area, to the left towards the back is Roman’s little sleeping quarters, and the top shelf of the brooder – at back – has the newest littles, the newbies. I wasn’t there for the grand exit, but Sue said that they didn’t get brave enough for the full outdoor adventure. The second time she tried, Roman was out on a walk about and he chased them all back in! We’ll just keep trying until they get used to the idea.   Continue reading →

They Have Arrived!!!

IMG_0569The newest chicks (Gray Rangers) arrived early this morning! Sue’s phone rang at 6 a.m.; the Post Office was calling her to “please come pick up your chicks!” They are simply little, bitty fluff balls at this point. Fifteen of them came in a container no bigger than a regular shoe box! They are different colors, which surprised me- they are not all gray, some are buff colored and various shades of buff and black. It will beIMG_0568 interesting to see how the feather out. They are busy investigating their new place, napping under the heat box or basking in the warmth of a heat-light, eating, drinking – you know, just being baby chicks. Sue decided to try putting their feed in an egg carton to start off; they just dig it! They can scratch and eat and, at this point, the food doesn’t go flying all over the place – genius! We like them a lot (of course) and are thinking of keeping all the hens and one rooster; this way we may be able to raise them ourselves. So that means that the number of chickens available for purchase is TBD.  Still taking orders on a first come, first served basis; so let us know. Continue reading →

Rainbow(s) over Huachuca City, captured by Alexis as we were on our way to California.

Ok, so you may have noticed that the posting schedule was a bit – irregular for a while; sorry about that. I took a quick trip with Alexis, to California, to be with my folks, visit a friend, and drop Alexis off to visit her dad – while my blogging intentions were good, and I had planned on posting last Friday, when I went into Starbucks to use the wifi (my folks live in the boonies as most of you know and, while visiting with them, I don’t have cell phone service, nor is there anything but dial-up internet <gasp>), I ran into several people from my previous church and didn’t end up typing anything but a title! Once I returned to Arizona, we had Patty and George visiting, and we were off having too much fun with them after I was done working and… I didn’t post. I tried to make it up by posting on Tuesday about our cute little Roman, and now I’m back on schedule for a while. In the interest of full disclosure, this off schedule thing could very well happen again because my folks, along with my niece, Rhiann, and my Aunt and Uncle from New Mexico will be here during Holy Week through to Easter (Would anyone else like to come and visit for the holiday? Just let us know and bring a dish to share! Hey, we might have more hands to help out with the P.O.W.W.O.W. that Saturday!). We’ll just see how that goes. Enough with the excuses~ let’s get on with the update! Continue reading →

It the first day of Spring! Thought we’d do an update on all things little and/or growing. Below, for your viewing pleasure, are photos of many new things coming up around the farm 🙂  It may seem like somewhat of a cop-out, but I think in can sum up the new spring growth that’s happening around here quite nicely.

Today’s Weather: Oh my goodness, it is just beautiful!  I have to say that the early evenings are my most favorite part of the day. Actually, I may have already said this! Everything is settling down, the sun slips behind the mountain and leaves us in its shadow, but there are still a few hours left before sun-down. It was around 78° after supper and just a slight breeze.  It was a hot one though today in the sun, my phone says it was 83°, but Sue said that it felt more like 89°.  It was around that in Sierra Vista at 1 or so. Generally we’re slightly cooler.  Low tonight is supposed to be 50°.  All-in-all, pretty nice weather for us Hereford chickens.

Egg Report: We had a great weekend for eggs. Saturday we had 7, Sunday we had 10, and today we had another 7.  7 seems to be our new normal low. 11 is the high, but we only hit that a couple of days a week. All told, last week we had 48 eggs! That’s not shabby.

Things Keep Happening Here

Even when we’re not around as much.  It seems like it was a super busy week, and there were not enough hours in each day to get the things accomplished that we want to. And yet, things keep happening around here… Continue reading →

Mystery Solved!

13 Monday Feb 2017

“What mystery is that?” you ask. Well – lately, we’ve been wondering what happened to our ladies’ egg production numbers; one here, two there, never consistent. After we moved them in with the Littles, numbers were a disappointment. I kept saying, “when things have calmed down, numbers will go up” or “when the weather warms up, numbers will go up” — it just wasn’t happening.  Continue reading →

Night Moves (and other happenings)

02 Monday Jan 2017

WOW!  I can’t believe that December has already gone and, here we are, on the 2nd day of 2017 and I’m starting off the year already behind!  So many things were happening through the holidays, with both Wing and a Prayer and in our own personal lives that I let myself get distracted from the blog.  With this post, we’ll try to remedy that.

getting-ready

Ready to move in!

I suppose the biggest thing we did was complete the permanent coop and move the littles in to their own place. We didn’t have any of the permanent roosts in yet, but the weather was getting worse and worse and we wanted to get them out of the wind before we lost any more to exposure.  So, we put in some 2×4’s on 4×4 risers just for temporary sleeping quarters, line the floor with straw, put their feed and water in there on risers and plotted our night moves.  When you make big changes like that, you want to minimize the upset for the chickens. So~ we moved them under the cover of night.  We waited until they were all snuggled in for the night and just moved them two and three at a time.  Once they go to sleep, you can easily just reach in and pick them up.  They don’t fuss or anything.  We would open the top of the Chickshaw, I’d reach in and hand one or two to Sue, and then take one for myself… only one because the other hand had to hold up the top and then be free to latch it after. Then we just carried them over to the new coop.

The night move.

One of the things I love about the littles is that they are so curious.  Once we moved them, I thought they would just settle down and go back to sleep, but they wanted to investigate every corner of their new digs.  They were pretty cute.  Eventually we let them be and they just settled down in the hay to sleep; nice and cozy warm.  In order to make sure they realized that this is their new place to be, we kept them in the coop a couple of days. Then we moved their fence enclosure around to the back door of the coop and gave them in and out privileges.
We had the guys frame in an old dog door for their private exit, but they were quite skeptical of it at first. It wasn’t what they were used to at all. We ended up taking all their food and water outside, giving them their favorite morning gruel in the feed bin right outside the door.  It was actually pretty funny.  They would take turns looking out the door and commenting, then electing to stay inside.  Finally, the littlest Buff, who has the most pluck (!) was the one to initiate the outings.  She took a look, turned around and chittered at the bigger guys and they started coming out.  Littlest chicken running the flock.  Now they come and go with no problems.
fullsizerender-8     Now that they were in there, we needed to put the finishingfullsizerender-24 touches on their new home. Sue was sure that they needed to have some type of curtains over the nesting boxes, so she went all festive and purchased Christmas Dish Towels at the Dollar General and stapled them up! Very cute for a short term solution!  In the photo below, the curious have gathered to check out their Christmas hangings.
img_2805     Sue then decided that they needed a roost and ladder to better access the boxes.  So she went about putting that all together.  It was installed the same day as the “curtains”, and again the littles gathered to watch the installation and kibitz amongst themselves at the wonder of it all.  I think they were probably saying “Oh my. Would you look at that!” and “Whatever will they think of next?”   Come on, say it like a chicken would~ you know you want to!
Well, what happened next was the installation of the roosts.  We measured and measured, and talked and talked about it.  Then Sue went and did it!  So, the roosts actually raise up so we can clean under them and the space allows for approximately 45 chickens total.  Sue says she over-engineered it, but I think it works great and the chickens have given it their seal of approval.
img_2810      This was all completed by December 20th, which is a very good thing because the evening of the 24th and morning of the 25th, it snowed!  Our littles were safe and cozy warm in their hay filled coop. On Christmas morning, Sue was slated to play and sing at the 7:30 am service, so I stayed and did the morning chores. The littles refused to come out and be in that cold white stuff.  They decided they were snowed in for the day. But the biggies were not deterred at all. They came out and were scratching around as though they were old pros at this snow stuff.   It didn’t last that long anyway, it was mostly gone by the time we came home at noon.  Everyone survived and stayed safe.  img_2817

That’s a pretty long post, so we’ll let it go at that and I’ll continue the update tomorrow; hopefully.  As always,
Thanks for reading!

Today’s weather:  We had another cold night and morning.  When we got up at 5:30 this morning it was 25° and everything was absolutely frozen.  Sue hauled hot water out to the goats so she could melt their water enough for them to drink.  The chickens greatly appreciated their hot oatmeal today!  My phone says the high was 53° but I really can’t confirm that.  The overnight low is supposed to be 34° and the high should be around 62°.

Egg production: has changed a bit with the cooler temperatures.  We’ve been getting 1 to 2 eggs a day.   I’m still surprised that they are laying at all, what with the cold temperatures lately.  We must be raising some happy chickens!

Even Chickens Need a Day Off

empty-nest

We’ve been trying to keep Sunday as our “day of rest,” or at least do things that are fun for us individually.  For me, today, that was going to the Military Intelligence Corps Band concert after church; for Sue, it was attending services at FCC in Ramona… listening to the music/choral groups she started show their stuff, receiving personal accolades from one of her favorite composers as well as a signed copy of the music he composed in her honor… she really didn’t know that was going to happen, but I think she had some fun.  For the chickens, it was taking a day off from laying. The photo on the left shows an empty nest.  No eggs for us to steal today!  Continue reading →
