shuffleWe do a lot of odd things around here. I’ve mentioned several times that we must be an endless source of entertainment for our neighbors. One of the more fun but odd things we do is the coop shuffle. It happens periodically when we have chicks that need to move out of the brooder. Continue reading →

fair warning

FairWarningI’m saying “fair warning” because we are going to talk about Chicken Processing day. Sometimes these things can be difficult for people to handle. We will talk about it and you will have a couple of photos and one video. If you are squeamish, if you don’t want to hear about where chicken meat comes from, or if you have small children that you don’t want to expose to butchering – please give this blog a miss. It’s not that it’ll be at all graphic, but the information will be there and we may speak about it frankly. Fair warning. Continue reading →

Nope Bird – LINE stickers | LINE STOREJust wanted to give you all a quick update. The meat birds received a reprieve thanks to the wind. Winds were high all night and are still as I write this at 4:23 on Saturday afternoon. We had a quick meeting in the morning and all agreed (especially the chickens) that we couldn’t really do this today. Tuesday we will look into taking over the dinky house and surrounding area to process everyone. We’ll still need to do the final cleaning here – because the dinky house is just not ready for that, and probably won’t be for a while. But if we can take care of most of the bird cleaning over there, inside, we’ll be so much better off than doing everything outside in the hot, drying wind. We don’t want to end up with chicken jerky!

I want to give a shout out to our friend Ryan R. and our friend Kayla J.-F. for being so sweet to offer to help. Ryan may still be able to help on Tuesday, we’ll just see how things go.  I will be updating you along the way.

Hope y’all have a great weekend! And, as always~
Thanks for reading!

from afar

afarIt was an odd homecoming. Throw some clothes in a suitcase, add some things to keep me occupied (read: work), borrow a MiFi device from very generous church friends in hopes of being able to log on at my folks’, leave egg delivery contact list and info for Sue, hit the road. 7 hours later, here I am. I’ve never left Sue on such short notice, with no plan in place, and without weeks of planning. Yet, here I am. For those not friends with me on Face Book, my mom was hospitalized with a TIA over the weekend. I’m glad I’ve came to, maybe, make sure that she doesn’t do too much too quickly; now I am updating you from afar. Continue reading →

Work Ahead

There is always work going on here; you’ve probably been following us long enough to know that there are always projects in the offing, or started and waiting for parts to come in, etc. I’d like to update you on a couple that are currently in action. Continue reading →

french drains?

mfd-logoWe’re having an erosion problem around the coop; aided by chickens, there is no doubt, but mostly due to rainwater running off the roof of the coop. It’s definitely not a drainage issue, for which one would normally use a french drain. So, perhaps we should call them modified french drains. Continue reading →

gardening anyone?

chicken gardenYep. Here I am on Super Bowl Sunday, watching the game and blogging, because – you know, there are so many replays and chatter that you can totally keep up and still do something else. Besides, I can always  stop typing to watch the commercials. It’s almost halftime, so we’ll need to pause live TV to go put the chicken’s in in just  a few minutes. No matter what is happening between the Chiefs and the 49ers (Go Chiefs – for Holly and Family), I really just want to talk about gardening and what we did yesterday. Continue reading →

string

stringYou’ve got to be careful when you google for images. Did you know that if you just put in the word “string” to search for images that you get a whole lot of photos of g-string underwear? Just warning you. However, I am not talking about underwear, nor string theory (which I love!), nor even about stringing words together – I’m talking about a string of not so great news lately. Just a warning, there is one graphic photo, but it’s in artsy black and white, so it won’t be too shocking. Let’s keep this one short today. Continue reading →

And…

And-they-re-off-racing-logo…they’re off! Or maybe it should be “in”. Sue has started the incubation of six goose eggs.  As this is the first time we’ve ever done anything like this, it is a bit nerve wracking. Several things to remember to take care of… also had to find a place to set up the incubator.  So here’s what we’re doing. Continue reading →

more winterizing

winter-quote-3We really like the winter, except the cold and the dark and the wind. Otherwise – it’s wonderful! Seriously, the cooler temperatures during the day are wonderful… but we are not liking the really cold winds that have preceded this next storm. The last rains were more than welcome and the ground is still nice and moist from them. There is an incredibly slight chance that we will get snow sometime in the next few days, but – for Dad’s sake – we’re asking it to hold off. Hasn’t stopped the winterizing tasks though, as we had several things still to do. Continue reading →
