FullSizeRender - 2019-05-10T144453.490Sometimes its the little things that make you happy. Sue sent me this photo of a small cactus plant in bloom. The bloom seems to be twice the size of the plant itself. I wasn’t sure it was going to make it at first.  Now I think I need to move it since it’s really close to a chicken run – the run wasn’t there when I first planted a little cactus garden.  Continue reading →

lining up

img_4436.jpegI know that Friday was a rather brief post and you are all lining up for more – like chickens waiting for their afternoon scratch. They beg just like dogs – as you can see here, they hang their heads out between the fence, just watching for Sue to emerge with the white bucket of scratch. To our chickens, all food comes out of a bucket. If you walk into their run with a bucket, they will follow you everywhere. Continue reading →

They are here, yes indeed. I think this will be a pictorial post with all the new chick (and duckling) cuteness we could come up with.  So incredibly sweet.  The chicks all arrived safe and sound. they were really crammed into their box, but seemed none the worse for wear when Sue brought them home and opened up the box. It was then a matter of getting them under the warming light, dipping their beaks in the water for their first drink, and letting them eat and sleep. Grow, grow, grow little guys. Today was the first day I saw the little duckling out of the nest. He was peep-peeping for his mama today and she really didn’t want me getting very close to him at all, but we were able to snap a few photos of the little one. Let’s just share what we have below.

FullSizeRender - 2019-05-01T175725.469It’s the first of May, so happy May day;  here are some roses for you to celebrate! This is one of the climbing rose bushes that mom gave Sue, which we planted this Spring. They are settling in just grand and are set to bloom and bloom and bloom. Glad they like their spot. We’ll continue to add more to the front fencing area. Continue reading →

Ok, everyone- I just want to let you know that my laptop is not turning on… why? Who knows? What this means is that I’m going to be blogging from my phone. What that means is that the posts are gonna be Shiite and sweet for a bit, until I can figure out what’s up, or rather, get someone else to figure out what is going on. I guess you can figure out that this has nothing to do with the title, right?! Continue reading →

friyayLooking forward to this weekend. We have some fun things planned as well as some projects and I’m hoping to get them all in. We also want to take care a few things for impending events. We can talk about those later.  I can tell you that we are still on duckling watch. Had a short scare that she’d given up this morning, but she just got off the nest to stretch her legs and get some fresh air. Sue was telling me that is smelled really bad in there this morning. So the mama maybe needed to clean out her nose for a bit. Either way, she got back on the nest and doesn’t seem to be giving up just yet. We’ll let her decide. Continue reading →

life’s roses

FullSizeRender - 2019-04-24T164456.974One of the most tragic things I know about human nature is that all of us tend to put off living. We are all dreaming of some magical rose garden over the horizon instead of enjoying the roses that are blooming outside our windows today. – Dale Carnegie
In my mind, this post was going to take on a slightly different slant, but then Sue sent me this beautiful photo of the old-fashioned climbing rose growing over at the “dinky house”. It is so genuine and gorgeous. Easiest care rose around this place. It grows when it’s time, blooms when it wants; is as happy as punch if you simply remember to water it every once in a while. Brings a smile to my face whenever I think about it. Got me thinking – what else around our farm gets us smiling? Turns out that there’s quite a lot that does! I really need to think about this today. Continue reading →

back to normal?

normal12Monday finds us back to normal; as normal as we’ll ever be, I guess. The cow poses an interesting question. What is our normal? I suppose I’d say the part of our life that is normal are the “chore” periods. We normally do chores three times a day: feed, water, gather in the morning, feed, water, gather in the afternoon, put everyone to bed in the evening. That happens every day. without fail. Everything else is a toss up. Weather affects everything we do, obviously. Weather may be predictable, but the forecasters are rarely 100% accurate. So that throws “normal” out the window. We just play everyday by ear – plan as much as we can and make up the rest as we go along. Continue reading →

the morning light…

FullSizeRender - 2019-04-19T152734.737…the lily white, declare their Maker’s praise. Sometimes you hear God, via hymns, in the simplest of things. Sue sent me this photo with the title “morning light through the RCW”; immediately “This is My Father’s World” began going round my brain. We’ve been taking an extra close look a our Father’s world this week with my folks. Mom especially. We have been walking over the property and finding little wildflowers that she hasn’t seen before, looking them up in the books, agreeing (or disagreeing on the identification) only to have to look them up again because we’ve forgotten what was decided. Almost the same thing happens with the birds. I do believe we finally agreed that the mama bird taking little tasty treats to the babies in a tightly woven nest build in our porch eaves, is a Cactus Wren. Took some convincing to bring mom over to that way of thinking. We’re always seeing renewal and rebirth around us. Often accompanied by silliness and laughter. Continue reading →

wednesday – short day

17 Wednesday Apr 2019

IMG_4376So, we know that Wednesdays are always short blog post days; I think that today might be even shorter. Sue has been entertaining my folks during the day, until I get home from work in the afternoon. Today they did the round robin of feed store, grocery store, and Walmart. Dad drove, so that was the big outing for today. Mom did the watering for today, it being Water Wednesday, after all. Sue turned on the orchard for an hour; it’s doing quite well. I’ll do the gabion garden right quick in a few minutes. There’s just not a whole lot going on that’s new and interesting to report. I can say that Thumper’s foot is doing a great deal better today. Swelling has gone down a lot and he’s hobbling around on all four feet. I think in a couple of days – if he’s smart about things, he’ll be right as rain. One of the most exciting things that happened this week was Dad’s gifting of “extra” tools that he wanted to get rid of – he sent a list to Sue and she said, “Bring ’em all!” So he did. A scroll saw, little saws-all, drill, two circular saws.  Not bad! Thanks, Dad! Continue reading →
