Take your pick. Both mean the same in my book. Told Sue, yesterday, that I wanted a white board so i could use it to be my memory. Since I keep thinking – while I’m at work- “when I get home…” or vice versa. Seems like I could remember to e-

mail myself something and that would work, but I can’t even remember to do that! Luckily, if it’s really important around the farm, we’ll say something to other and generally one of us remembers.  Case in point: Sue just asked me “How many dozen eggs am I supposed to take to choir rehearsal?” I would have totally forgotten. If I did have a white board, there are two possible outcomes. A or B.  Continue reading →

IMG_3041Here we are, back to normal days. At least as far as projects are concerned. It’s been rather an “everyday” kind of Monday.  Just another “day in the life….” Sue has all but completed the newest chicken tractor. Just needs a couple of handles and things that allow us to pick it up and move it around. I like this design that she’s been using recently. Has a smaller opening on top that we can use to get the food and water out of, the nesting box in the back with another hatch for access, and then the door in the front that lets the chickens in and out. There is also a roost across the middle, inside, for when they want to get up off the ground. All around solid little tractor. We should be able to move this one quite easily as it’s a couple feet smaller than the most recent one she built (I mentioned that already, right? – Sometimes I forget these things.) So chalk that up as completed. Continue reading →

IMG_3015.jpgGot back late last night, after taking an unscheduled detour due to an accident on the hwy east of Tucson, that added a bit of time to my already long drive. Isn’t it weird how, when you stop driving, your body still holds on to that driving sensation. Last night, when I closed my eyes, I saw a road stretching out in front of me… I think I drove all night. Oh well, at least I arrived safely into the (somewhat) cooler weather of Hereford. I was only gone a week, but so many things changed while I was gone. I suppose that’s normal. Just always surprises me. Continue reading →

hive1.jpgIf you’ve been with us from the beginning, you know that one of the things I wanted to do was have an apiary on the farm. Well, hybridized bees in Arizona have really made that impossible. If you have these “killer” bees on your land, even if you’re not aware of it, and they hurt or kill people or animals, the land owner is 100% liable for medical bills, and whatever else. So, since they are so prevalent in the area, and can take over a hive so quickly, we didn’t want to do that. However, Sue had already purchased the hive of my dreams: the Flow Hive.  Continue reading →

Blogging-for-SEOSomeone, who regularly reads the blog, suggested that I not fret so much about how the postings read, but just to simply state what’s been going on day to day. Most of the time I believe that’s what I do, but if I didn’t work at it a bit more than that, I think you’d be getting almost the same post every single day. Generally, I’m not home during the “working” part of the day; I get home when it’s time to do the afternoon chores. So, I don’t always have a great take on what went on during the day. This weekend and today, we did some interesting things and I think I’ll be able to share that pretty well with you.  Continue reading →

IMG_2769Midweek roundup! Well, update anyway. I had promised some photos of the RCW because Sue had been working so hard to get it completed. The goal is still to get it out in the field this weekend with the chickens out there and the fence up. Here are a couple of photos, inside and out! Sue isn’t really sure of about the Fire Engine red (called “Safety Red” on the cans) but i think it’s GREAT! And the inside looks amazing as well. She and Dustin are adding another couple of window on each side for IMG_2770as much  ventilation as possible, because it is getting pretty hot in there at this point in time. Want to make sure as much breeze comes through as possible. The flashing looks great along the bottom, don’t you think? Looks so spiffy and clean. Also – love the red ramp!!! “High ceilings and low floors.” Trying to decide what we should paint on it for the decoration portion. Do you remember that at first I wanted to decorate it like a Romney caravan wagon – that’s why I call it the Romney Chicken Wagon… but lately I’ve been leaning more to something a bit more modern. I mentioned the huge sunflower I envisioned immediately when Sue sent texted me a photo of the first coat of red. A few days ago I was thinking I could maybe do a fun chicken head on one side…  So, this is what I’m talking about:

SUNFLOWER-RISEN-SHINE_art
chicken shirt
chicken dinner
rooster

Which are your favorites? Or what would you like to see? I kinda like the sassy hen on the white background above… something like that would be funny. Maybe we should hire Caylor Nuth! (let’s see if she responds to that :).)   If you have an idea of what to paint on the wagon, add it to the comments, or message me. Maybe we should have some type of contest. I’m open to ideas.  All right, I’ve wasted a lot of time trying to find images of the painting that I had in mind and I can’t find it anywhere. So, let’s leave this train of thought and go on to other things.

Memorial-Day-BannerHappy Memorial Day (Side note: actually, that always struck me as an odd saying – remembering those who have given their all for our country, isn’t necessarily a Happy occasion; however, I am grateful for those who have fought to protect our liberty.) Here’s a quick post for a Memorial Day Monday. Writing while eating – so forgive me if there are little food stains on your screen :). We worked outside all day today. Lots to do and a great day in which to do it.  We’re making headway on many projects. Dustin came over to caulk the RCW – our goal is to move it, and chickens, next weekend. We laid out the drip line for the chestnut trees and I also started on the circle garden. The Chestnut orchard took the entire 500 feet of black line, plus maybe 20 feet more of used line. The water does make it all the way to the top of the orchard at a good clip, so we should be fine in that respect. That was the day today, but not really what I wanted to talk about. So let’s go there. Continue reading →

Write no this evening from the midst of the Neighborhood Market. This is our second time here, still trying out. Lots of really great vendors with fun stuff to eat/make/purchase. Lovely customers coming for the very first time and liking what they see! So far, I think this little trailer is my favorite. I haven’t tried any of her baked goods, but saw this little trailer and it made me think of my friend Caylor… she could totally pull off a trailer makeover like this. Has a great little kitchen in there. So fun! There areimg_2760-1 only two problems with being the only one at the booth: it’s difficult to visit the other booths and you don’t have anyone to give me a potty break! Last week Mom was here to help- so I was fine. Then miss Holly came by with Gus and Jack- so I could even go and eat! Need to make a friend here :). Plus, I need someone to help me with my sign. The wind was drying out my chalk pen before I was halfway done with the wording. Hey! wait, there are Holly and Mrs. Higbee with the whole family. Thank you, Mrs. Higbee, for giving me a potty break! Now I’m back, and- Look! Sue came to check everything out. Cool, maybe I can talk her into buying me a cookie from that cute little trailer.

monsoon

typical monsoon downpour

Sue’s been thinking a lot about water lately. I’m hoping that means that the Monsoon Season is quickly arriving. According the National Weather Service, the “official” start of Monsoon season is June 15th. The doesn’t necessarily mean that we’ll be getting a rain on that particular day, but that “in general” the season begins around then. Technically it begins when the dew point is at 55° for three days in a row, in Phoenix. But the weather service got tired of trying to get that information out and decided to just pick a date. Whatever, we’re praying for it! But praying for it, also means you need to plan for it! Holding it, directing it, moving it, using it, keeping it out of structures, etc. So, we’ve been talking about a few ways of doing that. Continue reading →

good on the farmI think we’re doing another post about the little things that happen that make up all the big things. Well – and there’s one, or maybe two, big things, along with some medium; they all add up to life on the farm. I liked that bulleted thing we did on Wednesday, so let’s try that again.
